BTC Markets pros and cons

Pros

  • Listed on AUSTRAC's Virtual Asset Service Provider Register (searched 22 October 2026)
  • AUD deposits (by Osko PayID, bank deposit or Australian-issued card) and AUD withdrawals to a bank account are free on the published fees
  • Advanced Trade fees on AUD and USDT pairs fall by rolling 30-day volume, from 0.85% while volume is A$500 or less to 0.10% above A$5 million
  • The terms say customer fiat is held with financial institutions and not commingled with BTC Markets' own funds
  • BTC Markets says it reconciles crypto twice a day and AUD hourly against a full reserve (company statement)

Cons

  • The 0.85% Advanced Trade rate on AUD and USDT pairs applies while rolling 30-day volume is A$500 or less, so the first orders after 30 days without trades pay the starting rate
  • Quick Buy/Sell has no trading fee but prices through a spread that BTC Markets says varies with each order
  • Custodial: the terms give BTC Markets legal title to customers' coins and let it move them to third-party custodians without notice
  • The authorised representative appointment (1297122) covers deposit and payment products under BTCM Payments Limited's AFS licence, not crypto trading
  • No audit or proof-of-reserves report found on the pages we checked (22 October 2026)

Who runs BTC Markets and what it offers

BTC Markets is a cryptocurrency exchange operated by BTC Markets Pty Ltd (ABN 45 164 093 887, ACN 164 093 887). ABN Lookup shows the ABN active since 3 June 2013 with a main business location in Victoria, and the AUSTRAC register shows an address in Cremorne, Melbourne. BTC Markets says it is 100% Australian, privately owned with all staff based in Australia. Its terms of service describe an order-book exchange where users trade with other users, called Advanced Trade on the site, plus Quick Buy/Sell, where the customer trades with BTC Markets as principal, and an OTC service that the FAQ says handles instructions over A$100,000. The fees page lists 48 assets in its deposit and withdrawal table. Individuals must be 18 or over, and the terms also admit companies, partnerships and trusts. The FAQ says identity verification runs through greenID and two-factor authentication uses Google Authenticator.

BTC Markets Pty Ltd appears on the AUSTRAC Virtual Asset Service Provider register with no conditions shown, as we searched the register on 22 October 2026. ASIC's AFS representative dataset (downloaded 22 October 2026) lists BTC Markets Pty Ltd as authorised representative 1297122 of AFS licence 525840, from 3 June 2022. ASIC's AFS licensee dataset shows that licence is held by BTCM Payments Limited and covers basic deposit products and non-cash payment products, not crypto trading. No AFS licence is listed in BTC Markets Pty Ltd's own name in the licensee dataset.

On cost, Advanced Trade charges 0.85% on AUD and USDT pairs while rolling 30-day volume is A$500 or less, falling by band from there. The band in force when an order is created applies to the whole order. Our arithmetic puts the trading fees on a A$1,000 Bitcoin buy and a A$1,000 sell placed within 30 days, after the hourly volume update has counted the buy, at A$16.80. Quick Buy/Sell has no trading fee but a spread that varies per order.

On safety, the arrangement is custodial. BTC Markets says it keeps a full reserve with reconciliations twice a day for crypto and hourly for AUD, and we found no audit or proof-of-reserves report on the pages we checked on 22 October 2026. The terms say BTC Markets holds legal title to customers' coins, may appoint or change third-party custodians and move assets without notice, and its risk warning names its own insolvency as a risk to customers' value.

BTC Markets worked example on buying and selling A$1,000 of Bitcoin

Our arithmetic from published fees

Inputs come from the BTC Markets fees page and FAQ, checked 22 October 2026. No account was opened and no order was placed.

Inputs

  • Deposit A$1,000 by Osko PayID or bank transfer (free)
  • Buy A$1,000 of Bitcoin on Advanced Trade, as the first trade in 30 days
  • Later sell A$1,000 of Bitcoin on Advanced Trade, within the same 30 days
  • Withdraw the AUD to an Australian bank account (free)

Fees on each step

StepRoutePublished feeFee on this step
DepositOsko PayID or bank transferFreeA$0.00
BuyAdvanced Trade (first order in 30 days; rolling volume A$500 or less)0.85%A$8.50
SellAdvanced Trade (rolling volume A$1000 once the hourly update counts the buy)0.83%A$8.30
Sell (if more than 30 days later)Advanced Trade (volume rolled off)0.85%A$8.50
WithdrawalAUD to an Australian bank accountFreeA$0.00
TotalBuy plus sell within 30 days0.85% plus 0.83%A$16.80

Our arithmetic leaves out the difference between the best bid and ask on the Advanced Trade order book, the 0.0002 BTC withdrawal fee if the Bitcoin is sent to an external wallet, and any change in the Bitcoin price between the buy and the sell. The example uses Advanced Trade only, because Quick Buy/Sell has no trading fee and its cost sits in a spread that BTC Markets says varies with each order, which cannot be calculated from the published fees.

BTC Markets' published fees give this result in our arithmetic, with free Osko PayID or bank transfer deposits and free AUD withdrawals. Buying A$1,000 of Bitcoin on Advanced Trade as the first trade in 30 days costs 0.85%, or A$8.50. Selling A$1,000 of Bitcoin within the same 30 days, once the hourly volume calculation has counted the buy, costs 0.83%, or A$8.30, because the rolling volume then stands at A$1,000 and the second band (A$500.01 to A$1,000) applies. Total trading fees: A$16.80. If the sell happens more than 30 days later, the volume has rolled off and the sell costs 0.85% again, A$8.50, for a total of A$17.00. The funding route does not change the total, because AUD deposits and withdrawals are free on the published fees.

BTC Markets spot trading fees on Advanced Trade and Quick Buy/Sell

BTC Markets charges fees differently on its two routes. On Advanced Trade, the fees page sets a percentage fee on each order for AUD and USDT pairs using a rolling 30-day total of AUD and USDT trading volume, recalculated every hour and applied at the moment an order is created. The band in force when the order is created applies to the whole order, not to slices of it. The bands run from 0.85% for rolling volume of A$0.01 to A$500, then 0.83% to A$1,000, 0.80% to A$3,000, 0.75% to A$9,000, 0.70% to A$18,000, 0.65% to A$40,000, 0.60% to A$60,000, 0.55% to A$70,000, 0.50% to A$80,000, 0.45% to A$90,000, 0.40% to A$115,000, 0.35% to A$125,000, 0.30% to A$200,000, 0.25% to A$400,000, 0.23% to A$650,000, 0.20% to A$850,000, 0.18% to A$1,000,000, 0.15% to A$3,000,000, 0.13% to A$5,000,000 and 0.10% above A$5,000,000. All trades are converted to AUD for the volume count. BTC pairs (ETH-BTC, LTC-BTC and XRP-BTC) use a maker fee of -0.05% and a taker fee of 0.2%, and trades on those BTC pairs do not count towards the AUD and USDT volume total. Quick Buy/Sell has no trading fee and prices through a spread that BTC Markets says depends on market conditions, the asset, the order size and available liquidity. For large instructions BTC Markets may quote an off-order-book price from liquidity providers plus its own markup. All fees include GST for Australian residents. We checked the fees page on 22 October 2026.

BTC Markets regulation and safety

BTC Markets is registered with AUSTRAC for anti-money laundering purposes, and its authorised representative appointment sits under a payments licensee's AFS licence for deposit and payment products rather than a licence for crypto trading. Its terms say it holds customers' coins in wallets it or its appointed custodians control. A registration is not a guarantee: AUSTRAC registration concerns anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing obligations, and the terms say digital assets are not covered by any deposit insurance scheme or government guarantee.

AUSTRAC registration and the ASIC record

BTC Markets Pty Ltd's entry on the AUSTRAC VASP register shows legal name BTC MARKETS PTY LTD, ABN 45164093887, an address in Cremorne, Victoria and no conditions shown, searched on 22 October 2026. The terms say BTC Markets is registered with AUSTRAC as a virtual asset service provider. AUSTRAC has regulated virtual asset service providers since 2018, and its article of 30 June 2026 says the public register lists all registered providers.

ASIC's AFS representative dataset, downloaded on 22 October 2026, lists BTC Markets Pty Ltd as authorised representative 1297122 of AFS licence 525840 from 3 June 2022, status Current. That licence is held by BTCM Payments Limited and covers basic deposit products and non-cash payment products, so it is not a licence for crypto trading, and no AFS licence is listed in BTC Markets Pty Ltd's own name.

ASIC's Moneysmart investor alert list carries an entry dated 21 February 2024 for "BTC Markets (btcmarkets.ai)", which names the btcmarkets.ai website address, while the exchange run by BTC Markets Pty Ltd operates at btcmarkets.net, so readers should check the address they are using. We found no BTC Markets Pty Ltd entry on AUSTRAC's enforcement actions page or its virtual asset registration actions page on 22 October 2026.

Custody and the terms

BTC Markets' terms say it holds the coins in wallets it controls, or with custodians it appoints. Clause 5 states: "BTC Markets holds legal title to those Digital Assets, and you hold a beneficial interest in the number and type of Digital Assets recorded in your Account." Clause 12 lets BTC Markets appoint, change or end third-party custodians without the customer's consent and move assets between custody systems without prior notice, with the customer accepting the custodian risks. Schedule 1 says: "There is a risk that BTC Markets may become insolvent or suffer Losses that affect its ability to deliver to you some or all of the value of your Digital Assets." Schedule 1 also says digital assets are not protected by any deposit insurance scheme or government guarantee, including the Financial Claims Scheme. The terms say fiat currency is held with financial institutions and not commingled with BTC Markets' own funds.

Its FAQ says BTC Markets uses a cold and hot wallet system with encrypted cold storage off-site in multiple locations, keeps a full reserve and reconciles twice a day for crypto and hourly for AUD. We found no audit or proof-of-reserves report on the pages we checked on 22 October 2026. The terms encourage customers to consider self-custody.
